Self-Anointed is the inaugural work in the Crown Series, a body of work exploring identity, heritage, and the quiet authority carried within Black womanhood.
For generations, Black hair has been politicized, regulated, and misunderstood. Yet it has always remained a crown — shaped by culture, memory, and resilience.
In this piece, the figure lifts her own hair, not in adjustment, but in recognition. The gesture is deliberate: she crowns herself. Power here is not bestowed. It is acknowledged.
Real hair is embedded into the canvas, reinforcing texture as lineage and form as inheritance. The woven earrings reference craftsmanship passed through generations, while the luminous rendering of dark skin centers richness, depth, and presence without apology.
Her gaze is steady. Grounded. Certain.
This work marks the beginning of a series that will unfold in chapters — each examining a different dimension of what it means to carry a crown that was never granted, only recognized.
